Rhinoplasty Surgical Techniques Open vs. Closed Nose Job
There are two main types of surgical techniques for rhinoplasty: open and closed. Dr. Barone will determine which technique is best for you during your consultation.

Closed Rhinoplasty
A closed rhinoplasty is a minimally invasive technique where all incisions are made inside the nostrils. This eliminates visible scarring and reduces recovery time. This technique is typically used for patients who need minor alterations, because the small incisions restrict the surgeon's view and limit the changes they can make to internal structures like bone and cartilage.

Open Rhinoplasty
Open rhinoplasty uses an additional incision across the columella, the section of soft tissue between the nostrils, to access nasal structures. The extra incision allows the surgeon to make more significant changes to your nasal bones and cartilage than closed rhinoplasty. The incision along the columella is small and placed in a discreet area to minimize visible scarring.
Preparing for Surgery
Follow Dr. Barone's Instructions
Dr. Barone will give you guidelines on how to prepare for surgery, including diet recommendations and instructions on which medications and vitamin supplements to avoid. Patients should make arrangements for someone to take them to and from surgery. They should also have someone stay with them for a few days following the procedure if necessary.
What To Expect During Rhinoplasty Surgery
San Antonio patients can have rhinoplasty surgery performed on an outpatient or inpatient basis, depending on their preferences. More extensive procedures may require an overnight hospital stay.
The entire rhinoplasty procedure typically takes one to two hours, depending on the complexity of the treatment.
Subtle Yet Impressive Rhinoplasty Can Fine-Tune Your Appearance
Recovering From Rhinoplasty What You Can Expect After Surgery
Like your surgical treatment, recovery is unique to the individual. However, below are some basic rules to follow and things to expect after rhinoplasty.
First Few Days
Patients should plan to stay in bed with their heads elevated for the first few days following rhinoplasty. Ample rest is recommended following surgery to promote healing.
Side Effects
It is normal to experience pain, swelling, and bleeding in the first few days after surgery. You can manage swelling and discomfort with medication. Your nasal packing can be taken out after a few days.
What To Avoid
Even with bleeding and nasal drip, do not blow your nose for at least a week following rhinoplasty. Patients should also avoid any strenuous activity for at least two to three weeks after surgery.
Resume Activity
While there may still be some residual bruising and swelling, most patients can return to work or school about a week after surgery. Strenuous activity will still need to be avoided until Dr. Barone lets you know it is safe to resume.
Final Results
Patients should continue to take extra care to keep the nose safe from outside contact and sun damage for at least eight weeks. Once your nose completely heals (around six months to a year) you will see your final results.
The Risks of Rhinoplasty Are Very Rare
You reduce your chance of surgical risks or complications after surgery when you choose an experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Barone. She takes many careful measures to minimize the risks associated with any surgery.
While rare, you should still consider these risks before you or your child undergoes rhinoplasty:
- Excessive bleeding
- Changed sensation in the nose or feelings of numbness
- Difficulty breathing through the nose
- Regular nosebleeds following surgery
- Skin discoloration
- Unfavorable scarring
- Infection
Combining Procedures For Even Greater Enhancement
Brow Lift
This procedure addresses sagging brows and forehead wrinkles. If heavy brows make you appear angry or aged, Dr. Barone can remove excess skin and artfully tighten what remaining tissue to refresh your look. She performs three distinct brow lift techniques that result in minimally visible scarring.
Blepharoplasty
Drooping, sagging eyelids can interfere with your vision and make you look fatigued or older than you actually are. During blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, Dr. Barone removes select portions of excess skin and fat around the eyes to create a rejuvenated, more alert look. She can treat the lower eyelids, upper eyelids, or both.
Facelift
A facelift can give you youthful refreshment and target wrinkles, fine lines, deep nasolabial folds, jowls, and more. A perennially popular procedure, there are multiple facelift techniques to help you address your individual concerns. Dr. Barone also offers the Quicklift™, an option with minimal downtime.
Combining treatments into one comprehensive plan can get you to your ideal results faster, and often more affordably. Reach out at any time to discuss the many options available to you at our San Antonio, TX, practice.
Rhinoplasty FAQs
Is the open or closed rhinoplasty technique better?
Neither technique is inherently better, but one may suit your needs better than the other. Dr. Barone prefers closed surgery for smaller changes to keep the treatment more conservative. To achieve your desired results, open surgery may be necessary for larger changes.
Is rhinoplasty surgery safe?
A level of risk is involved with any surgery, but when you choose a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Barone, you greatly reduce the risk involved. By considering your medical history before surgery and properly guiding you on recovery techniques, Dr. Barone promotes a safe surgical experience for her patients.
How much does rhinoplasty cost?
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of rhinoplasty in the United States is $6,324. Rhinoplasty procedures at our office start at $4,000, but the specific cost varies depending on each patient's needs.
Do rhinoplasty results last forever?
Our surgeon is making permanent changes to the cartilage that makes up your nose, resulting in cosmetic enhancements that will last a lifetime. As the skin around your nose changes with age, the appearance of your nose may differ, but structurally, the results of a surgical rhinoplasty are permanent.
